As a kid, I came to associate St. Patrick’s Day with Lucky Charms cereal and Shamrock Shakes. My normally-health-nut parents would allow us 1/2 cup of Lucky Charms as a topping on our healthy cereal (seriously), and mom would always figure out a way to sneak us into the drive-thru at McD’s for the green shake.
I’ve had the green shake as an adult and I swear they changed the recipe sometime in the past 25 years. It just tastes so… artificial. Likely redeveloped in some science-fiction flavor lab in New Jersey.
This recipe recreates my memories of the shamrock shake. Creamy, peppermint-y, simple deliciousness. Enjoy!
- 3 scoops vanilla ice cream – use plain vanilla, not french vanilla or vanilla bean, which don’t taste great mixed with peppermint
- 1 cup 2% milk (more if you like a thinner shake)
- 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
- green food coloring
- whipped cream
- green sprinkles
Blend ice cream and milk until smooth. Add peppermint extract and green food coloring, blending until shake is smooth and evenly green. Top with whipped cream and sprinkles.
For a decadent twist, make it a Peppermint Oreo shake – just add a couple Oreo cookies to the blender.Pin It
